We’ve had a dry spell – finally! – so there’s been some progress on the house. The trusses are now up and the framing is mostly done, giving a better idea of what the overall shape and layout of the house is going to look like.
We decided to extend the roof overhang a bit more in keeping with the craftsman style, so we decided to wait until the plywood roof is up to get an accurate measurement of the square footage before ordering the steel roof.
While were onsite we spent some time going over the bathroom layout in order to finalize the interior framing. Admittedly part of the time trying to remember why we went with the layout we did; “why did we decide to put the toilet here instead of there?”…you get the picture. You can never review these things too many times, in my opinion, just so we can be sure before we get further along.
While that’s been going on we’ve been focusing on our windows. And there is no shortage of options to consider. First the style options: Single hung, double hung, casement, awning, and so on. Then the glass type, the grill style, colours… so many choices! Luckily we have a specific style in mind, which helped to narrow it down.
One last minute change we made was the exterior colour. We were pretty sure we had picked the right colour since the “swatch” on the website seemed to coordinate well with the brick we selected (so glad we went through the brick exercise ahead of time… more on that in another post). Thankfully the colour samples from the manufacturer arrived last week, giving us a larger colour chip to place with our brick and roof samples and we found another colour to be a much better match. All the more reason not to rely on websites to assess colour.
After measuring the window openings 3, 4 and 5 times to be sure, the order has been placed and deposit paid, leaving our bank account is just a little bit lighter 🙂
Now we’re focusing on getting the exterior doors picked and ordered. We have 3 doors, one at the main front entrance, one on the side of the house and one leading out to our back porch. Like with the windows, there are a ton of options, so having a specific style in mind can be a good thing to hone in on what we really want. That being said, challenges arise when what you want isn’t so common, as we’re finding out. We’re expecting a quote this week so we should see what we have to work with.
After such a wet spring – contributing to 3 feet of water in our basement! – it will be so nice to get the house buttoned up so we can get moving on the interior.
Stay tuned for the next update!
